Veggie Bones Recipe

There are lots of dog treat recipes out there that include fillers like cornmeal.  Some of our dogs are becoming allergic to corn because commercial dog foods use corn as their primary ingredient!

Bake your own healthy, homemade dog goodies and skip the corn.

Veggie Bones

Ingredients:

2 3/4 C. Flour
2 Tablespoon Bran
2 Tsp. Baking Powder
3 Tsp. Minced Fresh Parsley (good for doggie breath)
1/4 C. Shredded Carrots
1/4 C. Shredded Cheese (your choice–mozzarella, cheddar)
2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
1/2 Tsp. Flaxseed (optional)
1/2 C. Water

Directions:
Preheat oven 350 degrees. Lightly grease a cookie sheet. Mix together parsley, carrots, cheese and oil. Combine the dry ingredients separately from the veggie mixture. Slowly add 1/2 c. water and mix well. Dough should be moist but not wet. Knead for a minute.

Roll out dough to 1/4″ thickness. Using cookie cutters of your choice, cut out shapes and place on baking sheet.

Bake 20-30 minutes until biscuits have browned and hardened slightly. They will continue to harden as they cool. Store in an airtight container once throughly cooled.

Makes 2 to 3 dozen

Crypton Dog Bed – Product Review

A Place for Kodi

When the big puppy got to be about 18 months, we made a big mistake.  We put his crate away.  One of the reasons was – – that the crate itself was so massive –   we had  over estimated what his full size would be when he was just 12 weeks  and ended up with the biggest crate in the store.  The black wire box really just wasn’t cutting it in the middle of 1976 living room.   Once it was safely stored in the garage,  it was a big relief.  But we had taken away something really important.  A place for Kodi.

So when we had a chance to figure it all out, we realized that the next step was a dog bed. We tried some of the big box store options but they ended up either to dirty to clean, or a cloud  of puff ‘n’ stuff.  Finally, we found a whole selection of dog beds at CryptonFabric.com. Sizes, colors and designs to accomodate even big dogs, and in wide array of colors to blend in with lots of decorating styles.  It wasn’t easy but we chose a bed and waited for UPS.

It’s pretty obvious that Kodiak is very happy – but it has made our lives a little more sane too.  We’ve been practicing – “go to your place” and have a treat ready for him when he heads over to his bed.  Huskie-Shepard is a high-octane mix, so we need every tool we can find to make the day go smoothly.

What’s great about this bed is the heavy duty construction.  Crypton has designed the fabric so that its virtually indestructible.  The fibers are woven so tightly I think it would be nearly impossible to chew and the heavy duty baffled zipper looks like its built to last.

The cover is washable so, when there is more muddy paws make their marks, we’ll be able to slip it off and throw it in the  washer.  With Boston weather, and especially the snow this year its great to be able to zip it off and throw it in the machine to wash. The Crypton beds are an investment, this one was right about $100.00.  I think though that it will last forever. . .and we like the snappy design.

From the Dogtionary: Umwelt

Umwelt, pronounced as ooom-velt is a how a dog views the world.

Recoined by Alexandra Horowitz in her New York Times best selling book:  Inside of A Dog, umvelt summarizes how a dog perceives the world by synthesizing all of the information in his or her sensory intake.
