Fun Run for Boats Benefits Humane Society of Manatee

The 4th Annual Boat and Personal Watercraft FUN RUN has chosen The Humane Society of Manatee as this year’s beneficiary. The June 25th event is hosted by The Bearded Clam and hopes to raise thousands for the local nonprofit.

Bearded Clam’s Wesley Rose said “The Fun Run is a great way to meet other boaters, explore local restaurants and, provide assistance to an important charity in town.”

Stops include Swordfish Grill, Bridge Tender, New Pass Grill, Drift Inn and The Salty Dog. Registration begins at the Bearded Clam – Channel Marker 16 at 8:30 am on June 25th with the last boat in at 4:00 pm. A special breakfast will be available at the Bearded Clam.

Hildy Russell, Finance and Communications Director of the Humane Society of Manatee told us, The Humane Society of Manatee has been helping animals in our area since 1971, and it’s more important now than ever to garner support from every corner of the community. We are especially grateful that the boating community has recognized the need to support our mission of saving lives four paws at a time!

Breed Profile: Yorkshire Terrier

by Lauren R. Tharp

Known as “Yorkies” to those who love them, the Yorkshire Terrier originated in Yorkshire, England (how appropriate, no?) where they were originally used to catch rats in clothing mills. Perky, fun, and utterly adorable, this toy breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1885 and currently reigns as the third most popular dog in the United States.

Physical Traits

Size & Weight: Extremely small, even by Toy breed standards. Yorkies are generally 5-7 inches in height and weigh a mere 3-7 pounds. “Teacup” Yorkshire Terriers can be even smaller than that!

Coat & Color: Colors are black and tan or “steel blue” and tan. Their hair is long, straight, and incredibly silky. Many Yorkies have hair that reaches all the way down to the floor.

Other: A Yorkshire Terrier named Smoky was a war hero (with the 5th Air Force in the South Pacific) during World War II. Smoky was also the first therapy dog!

Life Expectancy: 14-16 years.

Temperament

Intelligent and energetic, Yorkies are incredibly loyal to their owners and, although they don’t require much exercise due to their small size, they need daily interaction with their preferred human. Quick to adapt to almost any surrounding, Yorkshire Terriers are affectionate, fun, agile, and intensely curious.

Wags

  • Easy to train.
  • Excellent watchdogs.
  • Requires very little exercise.

Yelps

  • Grooming needs for this breed are high.
  • If not properly socialized at a young age, Yorkies can become yappy—or worse: snappy!—with strangers.
  • Yorkshire Terriers were originally ratters and those instincts still run strong within the breed today, often making them unsuitable around small animals (especially rodents such as mice, rats, and hamsters).

Do you think the Yorkshire Terrier would be the perfect addition to your family? Check your local animal shelter and/or rescue groups like the Florida Yorkie Rescue.

If you are a Bradenton dog lover, pet sitter or involved in the dog community at all. CPR is an essential skill you should add to your tool box. Quick thinking and CPR can save a dog until you can make it to the emergency clinic or to your veterinarian’s office. We found this video that explains the basics.

But, really you should take a class, to ensure that you have a full understanding and can practice CPR.

Interested in learning Pet First Aid and CPR?   You can take the class and become certified by the Red Cross on February 22, 2020   Click here for the details.
